Synopsis for "The Strange Trial of Green Lantern!"
After a series of uncharacteristic episodes in which Green Lantern had almost committed various crimes, he is brought before his fellow Green Lanterns for sentencing. The court of his peers is told of each incident: How Hal entered a bank, used his power ring to stun the tellers but left without taking any money; Hal almost bullied himself into not paying a $100 entry fee for a gallery; and finally how he procrastinated in saving a young man who had fallen out of a window. Deciding not to punish Hal because he had not actually done anything illegal, Hal demands that the other Green Lanterns punish him because he feels he has lost control. Putting it to a vote, they agree to do so, devest Hal of his Green Lantern emblem and power ring, seal him in a capsule and launch it into space.
While traveling through the void, the capsule is suddenly transported to the Antimater Universe and to the planet Qward, where Hal is brought before Sinestro. Sinestro explains that he escaped his imprisonment in his last encounter because he had a spare power ring hidden in the heel of his boot and manage to escape to Qward to plan a new revenge against the Green Lantern. He then explains he used a device to alter Green Lantern's personality so that he became selfish but couldn't push him into doing anything illegal.

Suddenly the other Green Lanterns arrive to save Hal, having suspected Sinestro's involvement they played into his hands. However, Sinestro traps them all in a room made of yellow material. Giving Hal back his power ring, he comes up with an idea of using it to pull chemicals out of the air and make an acid strong enough to melt through the walls. Freeing themselves, they easily capture Sinestro and subject him to his own machine. Imprisoning him with the device which would tell him over and over that he cannot escape.

On his way to a double date with Carol, Pieface and Terga, Hal notices a boy playing with a power ring, and dismisses it as only a toy. However after dinner at Pie's, Hal realizes that he has a hole in his pocket and that his Power Ring had fallen out of the hole. Telling Pieface to cover for him, Hal goes searching for the young boy who he saw with the power ring.
Meanwhile, the boy in question -- named Billy -- goes to a lone construction yard by himself and soon falls in a pit and is stuck. When Hal traces the kid to the construction site, he happens to spot some crooks and attacks them as Green Lantern. However, without his power ring he is easily over powered. Witnessing the spectacle, Billy wills the power ring back onto Green Lantern's finger who quickly dispatches the criminals. Saving Billy, Green Lantern makes a replica of his power ring for the boy before leaving. Returning to Pie's place, Pieface tells Hal that he covered for him by telling the girls that he lost his wallet. Wanting a moment alone to propose to Carol, Hal enters the room to find her mooning over Pieface's scrapbook of Green Lantern photos.

With no choice but to kill the creature, the Green Lantern uses his power ring to force it to consume it's own bodily waste until it dies. Green Lantern then returns to Earth to begin looking for a new career in his civilian guise of Hal Jordan.
Meanwhile, an advanced civilization on another corner of the galaxy has created a comedy/entertainment robot named Hilar. However, upon activating the robot they are horrified to find that the robot only causes negative things to happen when it tries comedy. With it made out of the indestructible Eterno-Metal, they cannot destroy the robot so they opt to deactivate it and dump it in a junk yard. Developing sentience, the robot reactivates itself and decides to try and bring comedy to other people on other planets since the people of Ghyra would just deactivate him again. Building a ship, "Hilar" manages to flee the planet and end up on the planet Earth when he decides to follow the Green Lantern back home.

There he finds it hard to adapt to life on Earth and when a police officer tries to pull Hilar off the road, he finds that he is violently thrown aside. Fleeing from the law, Hilar slips into a television studio where a comedy program is being filmed. Deciding to lend his own talents, Hilar crashes the show and the audience is horrified by what Hilar passes off as comedy. Elsewhere in the city, Hal Jordan has taken up a job as a salesman for a toy company when he sees the television program which Hilar is interrupting.

Slipping away and changing into Green Lantern, Hal tries to confront the robot but is similarly thrown back whenever he tries to use force against the robot. When a group of crooks led by a man named Piper witness this on television they decide to try and manipulate Hilar to help them commit crimes. Realizing that all Hilar wants is to make people laugh, the group of crooks gain the robots trust and aid when they pretend that everything the robot does is hilarious. After the trying to rob a train, the crooks and Hilar are confronted by the Green Lantern. During the fight Hilar learns that the crooks were only using him as the Green Lantern defeats them. However, Green Lantern is forced to deactivate the robot in battle. Learning where the device really came from he brings it back to the planet Ghyra where he lets the people there allow him to use his power ring to fix the robot. With Hilar in proper working order, he becomes the comedy sensation the people of Ghyra wanted, and Hilar himself longed to be.

Gardner would also tackle Hal's foes, Sonar, the Shark, Black Hand, Dr. Polaris and Sinestro. Synopsis for "The Shark That Hunted Human Prey!"
Hal and Pieface are en route to meet up with Carol and Terga for an afternoon double date when Hal suddenly stops the car and tells Pieface to go without him and as quickly as possible, changes into Green Lantern and flies away. The reason why is such:
Prior to these events a nuclear test had caused a shark to mutate into a highly evolved humanoid shark form. The Shark becoming more and more intelligent begins telepathically seeking prey until it learns of Hal Jordan and his secret identity as the Green Lantern and sends a telepathic message challenging him. This is what had caused Hal to act so rashly so suddenly.
Rushing to charge his power ring, Green Lantern falls right into the Shark's trap, and is suddenly transported into a room that's completely yellow. The Shark appears and warns Green Lantern that he has sealed Coast City in a giant dome that will remain unless the Green Lantern can defeat him. Realizing the Shark's weakness is the cold, he uses his power ring to create a giant ice maker and knocks out the creature, then uses his power ring to change the Shark back to it's original form and puts him in the local aquarium.

Changing back to Hal Jordan, he catches up with Pieface, Terga and Carol.

He learns that the planet, naming itself Green Lantern to honor the hero who's adventures it has come to know, it has been searching the cosmos for other living plants such as himself. He spotted the Green Lantern and hoped that he could help with some pressure that seems to be building up in his core. Using his power ring, he removes the mass of the planets core that is causing the pressure build up and puts it out into space, making it a sun for Planet Green Lantern to orbit around.

Now with a "friend" to keep him company, the planet thanks Green Lantern who returns to Earth to tell Pieface about his latest adventure.

Synopsis for "The Day 100,000 People Vanished!"
When the entire population of Valedale suddenly vanishes, Green Lantern's asteral form is summoned by the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians tell him of Sinestro, an alien they chose to be the Green Lantern of Korugar. However, Sinestro abused his powers and used them to enslave his planet and install himself as dictator.
As punishment, the Guardians stripped Sinestro of his powers and banished him to Qward in the Antimatter Universe. They then warn that Sinestro has formed an alliance with the Weaponers to finally defeat the Green Lantern, by potentially exploiting his vulnerability when his power ring's 24 hour charge runs out. Part of the plan was to transport people from Valedale to Qward in a sweeping attempt to capture Green Lantern, who was scheduled to be in that town.

Picture
Having his mind returned to his body (this time, allowing Green Lantern to remember his encounter) Hal flies to the next city which is targeted by Sinestro. In order to prevent the people there from being transported to Qward, Green Lantern makes them all invisible, and only he is transported to Qward. There he battles the Qwardian Weaponers, however surrenders when Sinestro promises to return the people of Valedale to Earth. In doing so, Green Lantern is incased in a yellow bubble, and Sinestro and the Qwardians time the moments left in the power ring's charge. However, when they release Green Lantern they are shocked to find he still has power in his ring and is able to defeat them all.
He reveals to Sinestro that he had found a tiny hole in the yellow bubble he was trapped in and used his power ring to fire compressed air at the clock they were watching to make it reach the 24 hour mark faster so that they would think that his ring ran out of power when it still had some time left. He then imprisons Sinestro in a force bubble of his own before returning to Earth and appearing at an opening of a Boys Settlement House in Valedale.

Synopsis for "Wings of Destiny!"
Sleeping one night, Hal Jordan has a dream about Pieface convincing him to change him into a bird with his power ring. This causes Green Lantern's ring to activate and send a beam out which changes Pieface into a seagull. When Hal goes to get Pieface for work the next morning, he finds that Pieface doesn't answer his door (Pie is freaking out at the sight of being a seagull for a reason he can't figure out.) Hal goes to work and finds a letter from Pieface's childhood sweetheart Tegra who is coming from Alaska to visit him.
Hal decides to rush out there to meet Tegra so that she isn't stuck waiting at the airport, while Pieface -- still a seagull -- flies to the airport as well. Hal arrives to find that the plane has been hijacked by some crooks and force it to take to the air again with Tegra still on board. Hal attacks the crooks as Green Lantern, but is knocked out momentarily when the plane hits a pocket of turbulence and he bangs his head on a seat. Before he can be shot, Pieface breaks through the window and distracts the crooks long enough for Hal to stop them and land the plane. After he turns the crooks over to the police, Green Lantern realizes that the seagull (Watching it take special interest in Tegra) is really Pie and uses his power ring to change him back to normal.

Pie and Tegra then later go out on a double date with Hal and Carol.

Notes
Although this issue shows Sinestro to have been a member of the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe have to explain his identity to Hal Jordan. After the Crisis on Infinite Earths, this will be retconned. Sinestro is established as Jordan's previous instructor and mentor in Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn (Volume 2) #1.
In later appearances, "Terga" will be called Tegra. She will also eventually marry Pieface.
This issue is reprinted in Green Lantern Archives, Volume 2, Green Lantern Chronicles, Volume 2, Showcase Presents: Green Lantern #1 and The Green Lantern Omnibus.

Trivia
Artist Gil Kane based the appearance of Sinestro on British actor David Niven.
In this issue, Sinestro still does not have his trademark Yellow Power Ring. He will start using it in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #9.

Synopsis for "Secret of the Flaming Spear"
Test pilot Hal Jordan goes to the office of Carol Ferris, daughter of Ferris Aircraft's president and CEO Carl Ferris. He asks Carol out on a dinner date, and Carol agrees. Suddenly, an S.O.S. pipes through the office intercom. A Ferris aviator piloting the experimental Flaming Spear is in trouble. Hal sneaks away and changes into the Green Lantern. He flies out towards the runway and helps bring the Flaming Spear safely to ground. His ring picks up a strange radiation emanating from the nose of the plane. Tracing the energy signature back to its source, Green Lantern finds that a group of saboteurs are responsible for disrupting the Flaming Spear's flight path. When Green Lantern appears before them, the thugs begin shooting at him, but he uses his ring to make their bullets explode. One of them picks up a yellow lamp and heaves it at Hal Jordan. As the power of his ring is vulnerable against anything colored yellow, the lamp succeeds in striking Jordan's head, knocking him down. The saboteurs take this opportunity to make their escape. Green Lantern revives and gives chase, but quickly discovers that their getaway car is colored yellow as well. He uses his ring to spike the vehicle's tires causing it to skid to a halt. The three criminals attempt to flee, but Hal binds them with tendrils of green energy. With the threat abated, Green Lantern changes into his civilian attire and returns to Ferris Aircraft. Carl Ferris calls Carol and he into his office for an important announcement. He tells them that his wife and he are going on an extended vacation for the next two years. During this time, Carol will retain full control of the company. After Carl leaves the room, Hal asks Carol if they are still on for their dinner date, but Carol tells him that as his new boss, their relationship will be "strictly business" for the next two years. Back in his locker room, Hal laments the fact that his power ring can grant him his every desire except the one thing he wants most in the world - Carol.

Synopsis for "Menace of the Runaway Missile"
After partaking in a test flight, Hal Jordan tries to ask Carol Ferris out on a date, however she rebuffs him stating that she is going to the celebrity ball to meet Green Lantern. That night, Hal changes into Green Lantern and has a romantic interlude with Carol until he notices a missile in the sky. Speeding off to try and stop it, he realizes that the missile is coated in yellow paint and his power ring cannot effect it. That is until he notices that the nose cone of the missile is not yellow and is able to stop it by creating a net with his power ring.
Tracking the missile to its source, he captures its creator: a scientist who put his evil ambition ahead of his country. After Green Lantern turns him over to the military, he returns to the Ferris Aircraft Company the next day as Green Lantern to apologize to Carol, who coldly rebuffs him.

Synopsis for "Battle of the Power Rings!"
After Green Lantern's power ring fails on him fighting crimes on Earth, figuring there is something wrong with the charge, he returns to the Ferris Aircraft Company to recharge his ring. He falls right into a trap laid out by Sinestro, who has a power ring of his own and uses it to freeze Hal in place. Sinestro explains that he made the ring -- which siphons power off power ring energy -- before Green Lantern imprisoned him during their last battle, and used it to escape the prison he was placed into. Trapping Hal in a energy cage, Sinestro then uses his ring to change his appearance to look like Green Lantern, as part of a plot to destroy the Guardians of the Universe.
Infiltrating a meeting of Green Lanterns from various sectors of space, "Hal Jordan" creates a menace for them to destroy with their power rings, little knowing that their "ally" is siphoning the energy from their power rings that he needs to attack the guardians. With his mission a success Sinestro leaves, dropping his disguise, to attack the Guardians on Oa.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, Hal manages to free himself from Sinestro's cage when he realizes he can harmlessly pass through it if he's not wearing his Green Lantern uniform. Traveling to Oa, Hal spots Sinestro trying to break through the barriers that protect the Guardians home. Attacking Sinestro, the two engage in a battle of power rings, however Sinestro keeps on drawing power from Hal's power ring. Coming up with an idea, Hal feeds Sinestro more power than his ring can handle, causing it to explode in his hands. Defeated, Sinestro is subdued by Hal until the other Green Lanterns arrive. Recharging their power rings, the entire group combine their powers to trap Sinestro in a capsule and send him off into space.

Synopsis for "Green Lantern's Brother Act!"
When Jack Jordan is running for the job of District Attorney, his brothers Jim and Hal help him out on the campaign trail. When reporter Sue Williams is assigned to the case to find a big story about the three brothers that'll scoop the other papers, she begins to think that maybe one of the Jordan brothers is really the Green Lantern. Believing it's the youngest and least remarkable brother, Jim Jordan, Sue sets out to interview him and try to expose him as Green Lantern.
During an interview she purposely makes herself fall off the side of a building hoping that Jim will change into Green Lantern and save her. When Hal (making a patrol as Green Lantern) saves her just as he is happening by, she begins to suspect that Jim really is the Green Lantern. When Jack is captured by crooks who want to kill him, Green Lantern saves Jack. When Sue arrives to report the story, she kiss Green Lantern with a lipstick that won't come off for 24 hours, hoping to see Jim with lipstick on his face when she makes a visit to the Jordan home. When Jim answers the door he is wearing adhesive tape on his face. Although Jim tells her he cut himself shaving, she becomes convinced that Jim is the Green Lantern. Several weeks later, Jack is elected D.A.
