Synopsis for "The Challenge From 5700 A.D."
In the year 5700 AD, the Solarite Chairman Korlian Dasor is petitioning his fellow council members in the selection of a new Solar Director. However, he decides that they should choose somebody instead from the past, and suggests that they pick the Green Lantern of the 20th Century. Agreeing on this, Korlian explains there is one minor problem with their time travel technology: Anybody they take from their past has their memory wiped out when brought to their time. In order to counteract this they have selected a false identity for Green Lantern, that of Pol Manning, who is a space explorer who has a romantic relationship with Iona Vane. Iona reluctantly accepts this for the good of her civilization.

While in the past, Green Lantern is called to action when a giant sea monster appears in Coast City, but as Hal prepares to fight the creature, he suddenly finds himself transported to the future and has his memories replaced with those of "Pol Manning". Korlian tells Pol of the Zegors, highly evolved Gila monsters which have now gained the ability to fire eye beams that seemingly destroy whatever they touch. Going into battle as Green Lantern, "Pol" witnesses one incident and realizes that the humans subjected to Zegor eye beams aren't killed, they're shrunk down to microscopic size. When the council (along with Iona) is also shrunk down, Green Lantern purposely shrinks himself down to check on them.

Detecting a strange energy source emanating from the ground with his power ring, Green Lantern returns to his normal size and check it out. There he finds the energy coming from a Zegor base, and destroys the device that is powering the Zegor's eye beams. With their power gone, Green Lantern restores all the Solarites back to their normal size and they fight back the Zegor invaders. Green Lantern then uses his power ring to imprison them.

With his mission a success, the Solarites send "Pol" back to his own time, where he appears at the exact moment he vanished with his original memories returned (and no memory of his adventure in 5700 AD). Taking one the sea monster, he realizes that the monster is actually made of gold. And so with his power ring he creates a giant vial of Aqua Rega and melts the monster away. Afterwards the military tells him that the creature was created from an unknown form of radiation. Green Lantern rushes home when he realizes that his power ring is out of power, which strikes him as odd because so far as he knew his ring was only recharged hours ago, little knowing about the future he had an adventure in.

Trivia
In its early appearances, Solar City was called Star City.
The date of the story was chosen at random by Editor Julius Schwartz and writer John Broome, who took the number from Schwartz's office phone, where DC's offices number was engraved: Plaza9-5700.

Picture
Pol Manning is a hero of the 58th Century with changing personas. Originally he was the Green Lantern named Hal Jordan, called forward through time by the Solar Council to deal with a crisis.

The time travel affected his memory, and a Council member named Iona Vane created the fictitious "Pol Manning" identity. Jordan eventually realized this deception, and they implanted a clone with Pol Manning's identity instead.

During another crisis, Salakk was called forward and implanted with the Manning identity. Eventually he broke free of it, but decided to remain in that century as a hero. This timeline was seemingly erased during Zero Hour.

Pol Manning was created by John Broome and Gil Kane, first appearing in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #8. (1961)

Sinestro has returned to Qward where there he is trying to win the most evil citizen of the planet award by eliminating the Green Lantern. Tricking Hal into traveling to a world where everything is yellow, Green Lantern is forced to use his bare hands and wit in order to get away from a the dominant species of the planet, yellow barbarians who want nothing more but to smash Green Lantern. However, Hal manages to escape thanks in part to Sinestro: Whenever Sinestro and the Qwardians viewed Green Lantern's fate on their monitor, the area would be bathed with purple radiation, negating the effect of the yellow world. This would allow Green Lantern to use his power ring to escape and transport himself to Qward. "Listen, we've all come through a lot in our different ways. Some of us had a comparatively easy time of it -- some of us didn't. But we got here seven of us now -- to protect this little planet -- and not only because it's right and just to protect life anywhere -- but because the future of the now-unified universe is evolving here now! We don't know if the Guardians are ever coming back, but we have their promise that beings like them, and the female Zamarons, will arise on Earth. That will probably be long after we're all gone... but like, perhaps, the Knights of our earlier days, I swear to give everything this ring and I have to keep alive in my time -- so that life in future days may achieve the grandeur we have been privileged to know in the Guardians of the Universe!" - Hal Jordan

Synopsis for "Setting Up Shop"
Ch'p and Salakk fly towards Earth. Both have agreed to join with the other Green Lanterns in patrolling Sector 2814. Ch'p tells Salakk of his recent return to his home world H'lven. Ch'p was shocked to discover that his wife M'nn'e had married his best friend D'll. Salakk too longs for a change of venue. After guarding both his own space sector as well as that of Katma Tui, he no longer wishes to operate in such isolated conditions. Though he is too proud to admit it to anyone, Salakk feels lonely.

They meet up with Hal, John, Katma and Arisia on Earth, only to find that they are now joined by an additional seventh member – Kilowog of Bolovax Vik. The seven Green Lanterns get to know each other better and set out to establish a new base of operations for themselves.

Meanwhile, Sonar and two of his underlings, Throttle and Blindside, meet up with another esteemed super-villain – Doctor Polaris. Polaris is flanked by three of his own associates; Whiteout, Dropded and Polestar. Polaris suggests forming an alliance with Sonar and his crew in an effort to destroy the Green Lantern Corps. Sonar agrees to the plan.

On the planet Maltus, Appa Ali Apsa shows Guy Gardner his new living quarters. Guy is upset that the accommodations are so Spartan, and feels that he deserves better. Suddenly, a fleet of Palomarisian warships enters the city and declares war on Maltus. Guy flies out the window and engages them, destroying several of their ships. The Palomarisians retreat from the battle.

Elsewhere, Star Sapphire returns to the planet Zamaron. She is agitated that her fellow Zamarons have abandoned their world to be with the Guardians. Despite her lack of companionship, she continues to scheme against her enemies, Hal, John and Katma.

Back on Earth, the Green Lanterns begin construction of the Green Lantern Citadel. With the power of seven Green Lantern rings to assist in the labor, construction is completed within short order. Polaris, Sonar and the other villains watch from a distance, biding their time until the most opportune moment to attack. They ambush the Green Lantern Corps, but even their varied powers are no match for the combined might of seven Green Lanterns. After an exhaustive battle, the villains are forced to flee.

Notes
Premiere issue; this series continues the numbering sequence from Green Lantern (Volume 2). Although the cover copy reads Green Lantern Corps, the inside indicia still recognizes the title as Green Lantern. The series does not officially become Green Lantern Corps until issue #206.
This issue contains a flashback to the Guardians and Zamarons exodus from Oa as presented in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #200. Nearly all existing members of the Green Lantern Corps were in attendance, but only a few are shown in flashback in this issue.
Guy Gardner was invited back into the Green Lantern Corps during Hal Jordan's absence in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #195.
Salakk agreed to watch over Katma Tui's space sector, Sector 1417, in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #197.

Trivia

All of the prominent Green Lanterns featured in this issue change their costumes except for Hal Jordan. By his own admission, Hal fought so long to get it back, he couldn't simply turn around and change it.

Hal and Pieface are en route to meet up with Carol and Terga for an afternoon double date when Hal suddenly stops the car and tells Pieface to go without him and as quickly as possible, changes into Green Lantern and flies away. The reason why is such:
Prior to these events a nuclear test had caused a shark to mutate into a highly evolved humanoid shark form. The Shark becoming more and more intelligent begins telepathically seeking prey until it learns of Hal Jordan and his secret identity as the Green Lantern and sends a telepathic message challenging him. This is what had caused Hal to act so rashly so suddenly.

Rushing to charge his power ring, Green Lantern falls right into the Shark's trap, and is suddenly transported into a room that's completely yellow. The Shark appears and warns Green Lantern that he has sealed Coast City in a giant dome that will remain unless the Green Lantern can defeat him. Realizing the Shark's weakness is the cold, he uses his power ring to create a giant ice maker and knocks out the creature, then uses his power ring to change the Shark back to it's original form and puts him in the local aquarium.

Changing back to Hal Jordan, he catches up with Pieface, Terga and Carol.

He learns that the planet, naming itself Green Lantern to honor the hero who's adventures it has come to know, it has been searching the cosmos for other living plants such as himself. He spotted the Green Lantern and hoped that he could help with some pressure that seems to be building up in his core. Using his power ring, he removes the mass of the planets core that is causing the pressure build up and puts it out into space, making it a sun for Planet Green Lantern to orbit around.

He is there to persuade Bloch to cease or at least suspend his vendetta until Con-Trol (as the company is called) can conclude their business. Bloch refuses and secretly reviews his file that Green Lantern is Hal Jordan. Hal and Carol have breakfast when Hal reads about Flash's recent legal problems in the newspaper. He decides to visit Flash and encounters Flash in mid-battle with the Rainbow Raider. GL intervenes and the two capture the criminal. The Shark is traveling the streets of Coast City absorbing the minds of innocent people. Dr. Clay Kendall experiments with his experimental Psi-Chair hoping to tap into his mind's potential. While in the chair he briefly makes mental contact with the Shark. The Shark wonders if he should seek out this mind but opts instead to attack the local STAR Labs as it was their atomic radiation that forced the Shark's original form to undergo the massive evolution to his current state. GL enters the building and the two fight which ends up on the street with the Shark gaining the upper hand and absorbing GL's mind. The SWAT team open fire on the Shark but he flees when his mind begins to burn.

Trivia
A page-a-day calendar indicates this story takes place on January 19, 1984 which would be a Thursday. Several issues/other comics can be directly tied to these events to the extent that their dates can also be determined. For example: This issue (as well as the next two) all occur on the same calendar day as does Flash #332 which has a mutual cross-over moment with this issue. The events of the previous issue (Green Lantern #174) occurred on Wednesday, January 18th as they are depicted in the headline of the morning newspaper. Likewise the events of Green Lantern #178 through #180 occur on the very next day (Friday, January 20th). GL's visit to the alien planet documented therein occurs simultaneous to a Justice League of America/Justice Society of America cross-over as seen in Justice League of America #231 through #232 which itself occurred simultaneously with the Earth-Mars War (documented in JLoA #228 through #230 which resulted in the formation of Justice League Detroit in JLoA Annual #2.

Synopsis for "Catastrophic Crimes of Major Disaster!"
Hal Jordan and Barry Allen are both shocked when they learn that both Carol Ferris and Iris West have found out their secret identities. Having Flash bring Iris to Coast City so that they can have a double date with Carol and Green Lantern, their date is soon interrupted by an earthquake created by the new criminal Major Disaster. While the Flash saves civilians, Green Lantern goes after Major Disaster, however Disaster manages to escape. Hal realizes that the the secret of their identities might have come out if somebody had read Pieface's secret case book, deducing that although he blanked out Pieface's mind to never remember Flash's secret identity, he never thought to condition the case book to shield his and Flash's secret identities to anybody else.

Checking at Pieface's home, they find that book has indeed been looked at by somebody other than Pieface. Dusting it for finger prints, the two heroes turn it over to the police for analyzing the finger prints. When they return to Hal's dressing room so that Hal can recharge his power ring, the two heroes are shocked to find that their powers have switched. Returning back to the police station, they learn that there are two sets of prints, one belonging to Pieface, and the other to a Paul Booker.

Picture
Using his Green Lantern like powers, Flash tracks down the location of Paul Booker to Major Disasters hideout. While the heroes are on their way, Major Disaster boasts about how he learned of the heroes identities one night when he had broken into Pieface's home to escape the police and came across his Green Lantern case book by stroke of luck. When Major Disaster sends meteors to crash into Coast City, the two heroes go to stop Disaster. Taking the fight to him, and switching their powers back, the heroes make it to Major Disasters lair. Disaster is about to activate one of his devices, but in his hurry to destroy Green Lantern and Flash, he forgets to put on his insulated gloves and electrocutes himself and seemingly dies. Afterwards, they find that the people of Coast City have suddenly forgot all the events of the day, including Carol and Iris who no longer know their secret identities. Hal and Barry surmise that it was probably due to the meteors which Major Disaster attempted to use against them. The two heroes then resume their normal lives, knowing that their identities are safe once more.

Synopsis for "Secret Origin of the Guardians!"
On Earth-Two, Alan Scott is shocked to find that his power ring is not working against a yellow meteor, and yet it is able to save Doiby Dickles' car from a falling tree. Realizing that his power ring seems to have the same properties of the Earth-One Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, Scott travels to Earth-One to tell his alternate reality counterpart of his discovery. However, when Alan tries to show Hal what his power ring can do on Earth-One, he finds that the effect has worn off. Realizing that there might be more going on, Hal suggests they probe Alan's power ring to find out what happened.

The ring begins by explaining that millions of years ago on the planet Oa on Earth-One, a scientist named Krona tried to view the creation of the universe with a device -- something that was forbidden by the Oa society -- however in viewing creation he caused a chain reaction that destroyed his device and created evil in the universe. As punishment, Krona was converted into energy and sent to spend eternity circling the various universes in existence. The Oans then created the Green Lanterns to police the universe and defend it from evil. The ring then explains that the yellow meteor that Alan tried to stop was really Krona, who was able to then transfer his being into Alan's power ring to piggy back into Earth-One.

Picture
Contacting the Guardians, they tell the two Green Lanterns that they are aware of the situation and that Krona is somewhere on Earth. As Krona builds a new device to recreate his original experiment, the two Green Lanterns battle environmental forces that are thrown at them as a result of Krona's experiments.

Not wishing to be interrupted by the two heroes, Krona uses his mental powers to manipulate the Guardians to come to Earth, and demands that Hal turn his title of Green Lantern over to Alan Scott. While Hal is shocked by this revelation, Krona takes control of Alan's body and attacks Hal with it. With Hal defeated, Krona has the Guardians brought to his hideout while the spirit of Alan Scott helps Hal track down it's location. Hal battles Krona and destroys his machine and frees the Guardians. The Guardians then banish Krona once more, and once Alan is restored to his body, the two Green Lanterns part company, Alan returning back to Earth-Two.

Notes
This issue told the origin of the Guardians of the Universe and established that the DC Universe was comprised of an infinite number of parallel earths, populated by different versions of Earth-One's heroes.

Synopsis for "Prince Peril's Power Play"
In order to avoid being married to Prince Peril, Princess Ramia of the planet Myrg decides to travel to the planet Earth in order to find herself the perfect husband. Arriving on Earth-Two, Princess Ramia soon locates Doiby Dickles whom she asks to help her find the perfect man, his thoughts reveal that Doiby considers Alan Scott the best man ever. However, before they can find Scott, Prince Peril arrives to take Ramia back to her home planet. Contacting Alan Scott telepathically for help, Scott arrives as the Green Lantern to defend Doiby and Ramia. Gaining the upper hand at first, Alan manages to keep Peril on the ropes until Peril is able to blast Alan with a paralyzer beam from his sword.

While escaping in Goitrude, Doiby tells Ramia about the Green Lantern of Earth-One, and Ramia is able to transport them to that universe with the aid of her dimensionizer device. Transported to Earth-One they seek out Hal Jordan for help, Peril realizes where they have gone and followed them to Earth-One as well. Hal spots Doiby's Green Lantern signal and changes into Green Lantern to help. However during the fight, Hal realizes that he forgot to charge his power ring and it soon begins to run out of power in the fight. Hal is forced to resort to hand to hand combat, but manages to fight Peril into a jail cell, however Peril breaks loose and knocks out Hal, then takes Doiby and Ramia prisoner and returns to Myrg.

Reviving, Hal recharges his power ring and goes to Earth-Two to collect Alan Scott. The two Green Lanterns then travel to Myrg where they find that Peril has forced Doiby to dress up like a jester and has taken over the planet with his army. The combined might of the two Green Lanterns is enough to drive back Peril's army and Peril himself is imprisoned. Ramia finally choses a husband she loves, Doiby, who agrees to marry her and remain on Myrg, while the two Green Lanterns return to their perspective Earth's and resume their normal lives.
